Late Afternoon on a mid Michigan GEM
Big Joe Weber got it done this past Friday with too many smallies to count. River smallies in the 15-17″ range are the norm this time of year on our mid Michigan streams.
Tony enjoyed a blue bird day with me Thursday. We fished three different techniques and scored on all of them. Smallmouth are on crayfish patterns such as the Single Fly Cray, present them on a Rio Outbound Short F/ I and hang on. Suspending minnow’s patterns fished tight to cover produced some violent strikes all week.
Old Friend Jeff Wicklander of Northville Barbers joined me on Wednesday for his first day EVER of smallmouth fishing! I have no idea how this Midwest native went 35 years without a meeting with a smallie. As Jeff could tell you he had plenty of meetings Wednesday.
Danny Adams working a productive riffle on a middle section of the Huron River. We had a nice relaxing half day float on Tuesday. Danny found solitude and several smallies during our half day.
Richard with a Kick n Chicken lover in the rain.
Tommy Vaughan of The Firing Line Gun Shop of Westland joined me for a day of fishing in the book water. Plenty of fish were landed during our float through some of the prettiest water in SE Michigan. Olive and Black leech patterns had us in the game all day.
Rich Wilkins stuck several mid Michigan smallies on the old Red Eyed leech. Casting accuracy was key and paid off with several stocky smallies coming to hand on another sunny day.
Howdy Holmes cashing in on some off colored water DONKEY hunting early last week.
Cathy Schultz cashes in on some high water love late in the evening. This is Cathy’s largest smallie to date! Black red eyed leech did the trick on this one as well.
Even I get lucky once in a while. My client offered to row me for a bit and bang this Huron River smallie decided to eat. I guess I still have it!
With the spring floods of 2011 behind us mid Michigan river’s are really heating up. Bill Kraus and Chris Beck put the boots to the smallies this week with BIG number days. The water temp stayed in the upper 60′s this week but there was little in the way of hatches on the water. With the bigger bugs in the near future and the shad starting to show up the next few weeks are looking good.
Bill with a camo striped minnow crusher!
A well played 19 inch HOG!
Chris with a tail walking 19 incher!
Putting the boots to the Bronze on this 18!
The water is warming and soon top water action will be going strong. The hits just keep on coming!
