How to Choose the Right Bass Flies

Bass flies come in all shapes and sizes, and one size certainly doesn't fit every situation. When choosing the right fly, start by asking yourself two questions: What time of year are you fishing, and what size rod are you using? These two factors will help point you toward the right bug for the job.

Seasonal Forage

Here at Schultz Outfitters, our fly selection changes drastically throughout the season. Early-season, cold-water fishing calls for smaller streamers stripped low and slow. As the water warms and bass move toward the spawn, aggressive swim flies become more effective, and the topwater bite starts to pick up with poppers and frog patterns.

By summer, water levels often fall and temperatures settle into the 70s. The topwater bite really heats up, making Boogle Bugs and foam terrestrials excellent choices. As temperatures drop in the fall, bigger streamers come back into play as bass feed heavily ahead of winter.
