What do I need to tie Game Changers?
A lot of people may be a little intimidated by the thought of tying Game Changers. There are definitely a lot more moving parts (pun ABSOLUTELY intended) than with a typical articulated streamer. So the question, what do I REALLY need to tie some of these up for myself?
Necessary Hardware
As with any fly, you must start with your hook of choice is the best place to start. A short-shank hook is generally best for the job. Using something like an Ahrex SA280 Minnow Hook or a Gamakatsu SL12s 1xs will provice you a good, stout hook that will wrangle just about any species.
Next, you gotta have your shanks. Spawn Articulated Shanks are the gold standard of fly shanks and are sold from 10mm up to 25mm leaving you the opportunity to tie them in all sorts of sizes.
As with any streamer, you gotta have something for your tail. At a basic level, marabou is ALWAYS a good choice. If you want to switch it up and throw in something that will have some more kick, Smalljaw Syndicate Mop Tails add a really cool action to your fly when paused.
What Else Do I Need?
Outside of the bare necessities of needing hooks, shanks and a tail, you gotta get into your body materials. Changers can be tied using synthetic or natural materials. Synthetics like Game Changer Chenille orChocklett's Finesse Brush are super easy to use! Just wrap and trim and you have yourself a fly!
Changers tied with naturals materials require a little more. A soft feather like Hen or Schlappen is normally used when tying a feather changer. To keep a good profile, you have to use what we call a prop. A synthetic brush like the Just Add H2O Translucy or Chocklett's Filler Flash will prop up that material and keep that profile right!
What Else Could I Use?
This is where you can admittedly get into the weeds. You can add all sorts of extra materials to your fly if you'd like. Rubber legs, a brush head, lead wire or a weighted bead for weight. All of this is entirely up to you and what you want your flies to do. There's no shortage of videos out there of people tying cool Changers and you can learn something different from all of them!
