Born from real-world permit fishing and over a decade of refinement, this Reef Crab pattern traces its origins to a DIY saltwater trip to Guanaja, Honduras. Designed specifically with wary permit in mind, the fly was developed after extensive research into natural crab profiles and behavior, followed by hands-on experimentation at the vise.
Rather than relying on traditional wool materials, the pattern incorporates rabbit for a more lifelike movement and texture in the water. Carefully blended with deer hair, the body achieves a naturally mottled appearance that closely mimics live reef crabs found on flats throughout the tropics.
The original olive version quickly proved itself, producing multiple DIY permit on its first outing. Since then, this fly has earned a strong reputation across major permit destinations including the Bahamas, Belize, Mexico, and even selective use among Florida Keys guides.
Later refinements included the addition of Pat Cohen’s laser-cut claws, which not only enhanced the realism of the profile but also improved overall performance. After extensive testing on the water, the updated version has shown even greater effectiveness, combining durability, realism, and subtle movement that triggers confident eats.
