As we slide deeper into winter, that means we are entering into the best time of the year to start stocking those fly boxes. With Bobbin The Hood 2026 in the rearview mirror, it's the perfect time to take our new-found inspirations and curiosities and hunker down inside at the tying desk with your libation of choice and look ahead at the warmer, fishier days on the horizon. We’ve been getting product in every day and are well-stocked with the all of the basics, as well as some good new stuff as well. We also have brand new fly tying kits on the site where you can get all of the materials for your favorite SO Signature Flies on one page. We have more than enough to get us all through these dog days of Winter!

New Materials at the Shop

January is a fun time for us here at the shop when it comes to tying materials. This year, we have a good bit of new product that is new in general, but also new to us. Here are some of the new products to use at your desk this winter!

Nature’s Spirit Mottled Schlappen

To put it simply, the new Mottled Schlappen feathers from Nature’s Spirit are just cool-looking. Whether you’re getting a bright or a natural color, these feathers are blended with brown and natural-looking black colors to really give each feather a beautiful looking blend. Perfect for tails and palmering!

Senyo’s Peppered Satin Chenille

Senyo’s MFC lineup just got better with the new Peppered Satin Chenille. Very similar to the standard Super Satin Chenille, this new product features a black hue within all of the colors to give it a really nice mottled look. Now also available in 40mm! Check this out and all of Senyo's other awesome materials here!

Chocklett Factory Support Discs

The new Support Discs from the Chocklett Factory are a great addition to Blane’s collection of game-changing materials. The discs come in a wide variety of sizes for anglers tying everything from big musky changers to smaller, finesse style flies. These are perfect for adding the appearance of bulk to your flies while using minimal materials.

EP Tarantula Brush

The EP Tarantula Brush is a product that has been out for a bit, but has evaded our shelves for the last couple of years, until now! The Tarantula Brush is an awesome material for tying heads and bodies. Great for freshwater and saltwater alike. There is no shortage of fun ways to use this brush!

Sight Cast Arctic Fox Hair

As we continue to expand our lineup from Sight Cast, their Arctic Fox Hair was a no-brainer. Arctic Fox is an awesome material with tons of different applications. Streamers and saltwater flies, spinning or hollow tying, Arctic Fox is a material that you need to incorporate into your flies in 2026!

Honorable Mentions

Hareline Triple Barred Sili Legs, Sight Cast Holo Fiber Wrap, Ahrex XO784 BC Gamechanger Hooks, Semperfli Nano Silk, 4x8 Varner Big Bug Hair Patches

Must-Have Tools

As fly tyers, we know how important the right tools are for us to be successful at the vise. A great bobbin, a great pair of scissors or any of your other favorite tools are worth their weight in gold. Here are some of the tools that we’ll be tying with this winter!

Sight Cast Ultimate Bodkin

This is an absolute workhorse of a tool. The Sightcast Ultimate Bodkin combines three tools into one. A traditional bodkin, a dubbing brush, and a comb. No more need to clutter your tool bar with everything when you can have the Sight Cast Ultimate Bodkin. At $13.99, this is a must have at your bench.

RaidZap Xact Bobbin

The Raid Zap XAct Bobbin is a tool that a bunch of us here in the shop have at their tying desk. It comes with interchangeable heads and tubes so that no matter what you’re tying, you can tie comfortably and efficiently. It’s a must-have if you’re someone who ties everything from 4/0 pike streamers down to 22 midges.

Hareline Stainless Steel Dubbing Brush

For what we do, a sturdy dubbing brush is non-negotiable. Whether you’re spinning big loops or trying to tame a big brush head, you need a tool that will help you free all of those trapped fibers so that you can really make that fly come to life.

Honorable Mentions

Hareline Cautery Tool, Stonfo Streamer Bobbin, Renzetti R-Evolution Hair PackerLoon UV Plasma Light

Winter fly tying can be the perfect way to pull yourself out of the seasonal rut and look forward to the fun ahead. We are all stocked up with your favorite brushes, hooks, and feathers.
